As temperatures rise, energy storage helps “peak reduction”

The latest data from the National Energy Administration shows that from January to May, the country's electricity consumption was 3,532.5 billion kilowatt-hours, a year-on-year increase of 5.2%. Among them, the country's electricity consumption in May was 722.2 billion kilowatt-hours, a year-on-year increase of 7.4%.

Since June, with the overall improvement of my country's economic situation and the gradual increase in temperature, the demand for electricity in the whole society has further increased. "Currently, the maximum load of China Southern Power Grid this year has reached 222 million kilowatts, which is close to the highest in history. The electricity load in Guangxi and Hainan has hit record highs several times." said the relevant person in charge of China Southern Power Grid.

As the overall electricity load increases, and is subject to my country's energy endowment and load distribution, as well as complex factors such as wind, solar, water-related climate factors, and primary energy supply, the "structural power shortage" in some areas has become a test for the power grid. The power grid shows local, periodic and seasonal power supply and demand shortages. Especially in the past two years, the "power rationing" incidents in some areas have drawn everyone's attention back to the guarantee of power supply, and reliable supply of power is the basis for ensuring the development of the national economy and the normal production and life of residents and enterprises.

During the peak summer period this year, the power supply and demand situation in southern, eastern and central China is tight, and there is a power gap. In response to short-term power shortages in the grid, energy storage can play functions such as peak shaving and demand-side response.

For user-side energy storage, profits are currently mainly made through the difference between peak and valley electricity prices. Users can use the energy storage system to store energy during low power consumption periods and discharge it during peak load periods, thereby reducing the overall load and achieving the purpose of reducing capacity electricity bills.

In the electricity market that implements peak and valley electricity prices, the energy storage system is charged when the electricity price is low and the energy storage system is discharged when the electricity price is high, thereby realizing arbitrage of the peak and valley electricity price difference and reducing electricity costs.

        With the rapid development of new energy storage, in addition to the "main forces" such as thermal power, gas-fired units, and pumped hydro energy storage, new energy storage is becoming a "new force". However, how to use new energy storage to "reduce peaks" still needs further work. Establish its call and price mechanism to fully utilize its effectiveness and stimulate the motivation and potential of energy storage users by obtaining reasonable returns.
